Fortnight For Freedom 2013

As we draw near to the celebration of our country's 237th birthday, we thank God who "has formed and preserved us as a nation." But, we also realize the great and unprecedented danger our land faces. For forty years, our unborn brothers and sisters have been stripped of their rights - even the right to life. And now, marriage, the family, and our very freedom of religion are under attack. As Christians we are empowered to fight back. But, we don't fight fire with fire; we follow Christ's example, conquering hatred with love, ignorance with truth and darkness with the light of hope.

As our Blessed Mother reminds us, only "prayer and fasting can end war. They can change the natural law." At all times we are called to take up the arms of the Spirit - (St. Padre Pio called the Rosary "the weapon!") but especially in these restless days our Bishops are asking us to offer special prayers and sacrifices on behalf of these United States.

This year's FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM extends from Friday, June 21st to Thursday, the Fourth of July. As a parish family, we will be offering special prayers of reparation (the Chaplet of Divine Mercy) before our Masses. As individual families, we can pray each day in these, or similar, words:

God our Father, Giver of life,
we entrust the United States of America
to Your loving care.

You are the rock on which this nation was founded.

You alone are the true source
of our cherished rights to life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Reclaim this land for Your glory
and dwell among Your people.

Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts
of our nation's leaders.

Open their minds to the great worth of human life
and the responsibilities
that accompany human freedom.

Remind Your people that true happiness
is rooted in seeking and doing Your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate,
Patroness of our land,
grant us the courage to reject the "culture of death."

Lead us into a new millennium of life.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
